How to Choose a Pool Liner Color: Finding the Perfect Fit for Your Backyard
When the time comes to choose a replacement pool liner, you are immediately faced with hundreds of choices. Making the correct color choice can feel like a difficult decision! You need to make sure the pattern goes perfectly with your backyard aesthetic and your personal taste.
So, where do we start? Let’s break down the two biggest decisions you’ll need to make.
Light vs. Dark Pool Liners

The first thing to ask yourself is: do you want a dark liner or a light liner? Here is what you need to consider to make the right choice for your pool:
- Temperature: While it is true that a dark liner will retain more of the sun’s heat, this only works if your pool gets direct sunlight. If your pool is in a mostly shaded area, the darkness of the liner will not help heat the water, and the overall look might just end up being too dark.
- The Vibe: What feel are you looking to achieve? Darker liners give the water a rich, deep look, similar to the open ocean. A light-colored liner, on the other hand, will give you the bright, inviting feel of a tropical oasis.
- Fading: Some people assume a darker liner won’t show fading over time as much as a light liner. This is a myth! Darker liners still fade, and because liners rarely fade uniformly, you may end up with uneven, patchy areas. If fading is a primary concern, look into our AquaMax liners. They feature a protective topcoat that guards against UV and chemical damage.
- Cleanliness: Dark liners hide dirt well. This is a pro if you are having company over and don’t have time to vacuum, but it becomes a con when you are trying to vacuum and can’t easily spot the debris.
Should I Choose a Tile Border or Go Borderless?

After you have made your choice between a light and dark color, the next decision is between a liner with a tile border (shown on the left) or a liner without a tile border (shown on the right).
While the most popular choice is to have a tile border around the top, borderless liners are rapidly gaining popularity. Here is how to decide:
When to Choose a Tile Border:
- Color Matching: A tile border adds another layer of design, allowing you to draw out the colors of your house, pool deck, coping, or patio furniture.
- Pool Structure: If your pool has aluminum (or white metal) coping, or if you have fiberglass steps, a tile border is highly recommended to tie the look together seamlessly.
When to Go Borderless:
- The Gunite Look: A liner without a border often looks more sophisticated and can give your vinyl liner pool the high-end look and feel of a gunite pool.
- Pool Structure: If your pool has stone coping around the edge and vinyl-covered steps, an “all-bottom” pattern without a border can make your pool look incredibly custom and sleek.
All of our liner patterns can be installed without the tile border around the top. Keep in mind that this choice is completely a matter of personal preference, so take all advice with a grain of salt! It is your pool, so if you love the all-bottom look, go for it and enjoy the backyard you’ve created.
